Tips when buying a go kart
Driving a go kart can be a bit intimidating the first time out. With all of the other karts weaving in and out of your lane. These instructions are meant to lead you to have a safe and successful go kart drive the first time out.
Before you take off
Choosing the right go kart is definitely one of the most important choices you will make as a successful go kart driver. The initial inspection of the carts should give clues as to which cart is faster. Always choose a kart with newer tires. If you have seen any of the previous races, also consider choosing a cart that appeared to handle well while still going fast.
Once you have picked the cart, be sure you are sitting properly. Your back should be against the seatback. Do not lean forward when you are moving. This will slow you down.
Driving safely
Most accidents occur in the turns. Enter the turns at a slower speed and accelerate out of them. Another tip is to go a little wide on the turn, hug the inside line at the apex and come out wide again. This generally gives you more control. Be sure that you are not going so fast that you skid on a turn. This will significantly slow you down. If you are interested in winning a race, these techniques will help maintain your momentum.
Definitely take care when passing! Do not attempt a pass when you are in danger of going into the tires. There is no quicker way to be out of the running having to right a go kart that has gone out of control.
Maintaining speed
One of the best ways to drive safely and maintain speed is to loosely follow a faster driver. Follow their lines as much as possible while maintaining the speed that is comfortable for you. You never want to drive the go kart faster than you feel you can control.
When approaching the turns, be sure to brake before you head into the turn. As with automobiles, go karts are more likely to skid if you brake during the turn.
One other tip on maintaining speed – do not apply the brake and push the accelerator at the same time. On most tracks this will stall the go kart.
In many ways, the rules of go kart driving are similar to those of on the road driving. Keep your head about you, be aware and approach other drivers with caution.
